For 32 years there's been a National Motocross Championship series race at Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, and every year it's pretty well been the definition of motocross, east-coast style. Well known for it's rough, demanding circuit with hills, ruts, tacky clay soil, off-camber sections, and a tendency for lots of rain, High Point once again managed to deliver the goods needed for a great weekend of racing.
Ever evolving, High Point offered quite a lot of track changes this year with an entirely new section added in the back area and the re-addition of an old portion that had been taken away. None of this mattered to Kawasaki-mounted James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto, though, as both won their motos quite convincingly-to the surprise of absolutely no one. Torrential downpours on Saturday had resulted in an abbreviated practice session for both days, and a track that had the soaked topsoil scraped away to reveal a drier, much harder and rockier base than had been planned. Luckily for Stewart and Villopoto, they dominate on either type of surface.
Motocross Class
About as predictable as a Stewart win is a Mike Alessi holeshot, and Mikey didn't disappoint at High Point. Alessi nabbed both starts with ease, but failed to lead by the end of lap one although he did put up a bit of a fight in the first moto-actually re-passing Stewart briefly after James had put the move on him at the halfway point of the opening lap. After that, though, Stewart quickly gapped the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki factory pilot before putting it on cruise control around the somewhat slick and technical circuit-a track that he said he truly enjoyed. " I thought the track was fun, and these guys did a great job with it," Stewart said. "It was challenging without being dangerous-they fixed a couple of spots that I thought were dangerous in the past, like that step-down double behind the starting line that got me a couple of years ago; Man I don't miss that thing one bit!"
Further back but still on the podium with his consistent ride was Honda Red Bull Racing's Davi Millsaps, who went 3-3 on the day to snag the final podium position. In the process, he went around Short, Ferry and Ryan Clark in moto one, and actually didn't pass or get passed by a single soul in moto two, riding in third for the duration. Also notable was the performance of privateer-extraordinaire Cody Cooper on his Suzuki City/OTSFF Suzuki, who found himself as high as fourth in moto two, battling with factory riders on both sides of him. Cooper ended the day in a solid eighth overall with 10-7 moto scores. Even better was Tuf/THOR's Sean Hamblin, who charged all day to snag seventh overall via 6-9 finishes.
Stewart continued his perfect season, notching moto wins seven and eight and overall win number four on his quest for an RC-like year in the premier class of the sport.

Motocross Lites Class
Ryan Villopoto dominated the day: It was predictable, it was without incident, and it was impressive. What's more interesting, though, was the presence of a newly rising Lites star, and that's Geico Powersports/Honda's Jake Weimer. Jake enjoyed his second week at the front of the pack, nabbing both holeshots (or close to it) and running at the front for both motos, eventually finishing the afternoon in second overall.
Getting back in the game up front this weekend was Boost Mobile/YOT's troubled champ Jason Lawrence. J-Law worked his way up through the pack in the first moto after a mediocre start to snag a fourth, after parking Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey in the process-a move that Dungey was quite upset about, judging from his candid comments in the press conference afterwards (more on that in What Really Happened later today). Also finding himself up front for the first time this season was Dungey's teammate Nico Izzi, who had skipped last weekend's round due to a crash he'd had in the previous round at Hangtown. Izzi ripped through turn one in second just behind Weimer, and continued to run second throughout the moto until finally giving up that spot to Weimer on lap 11, proving he had the speed to run the pace just behind Villo.
